Spyke Blaster Review
Spyke is a small Italian company the produces top notch, high end motorcycle leathers such as the Spyke Blaster suit. However small they may be, they can boast to the fact that top level motorcycle racers such as James Ellison, Josh Brookes and Steve Plater among others wear their suits, proving that what they manufacture is truly high quality. As with most things Italian however you will have to pay a premium for all this safety and styling excellence.
The Spyke Blaster suit is made with full grain leather, meaning that throughout the manufacturing process the leather (hide) has not had any layers removed, nor has it gone through any sanding or buffing. This means that the original hide keeps all of its fibre strength but also maintains it's durability. It makes you wonder why you have to pay more money for something that has had less work done to it, but you could argue that you are paying more for tough, top quality leather protection.

The Spyke Blaster suit is not completely covered in leather, you have stretch fabric panels in areas where there is a lot of flexion such as behind the knees and inside the elbows. These fabric panels have been manufactured to have a higher tenacity which basically means they will withstand greater amounts of stretching and friction wear.
The lower back and stomach regions have been given extra padding and I suppose there's only one way to say, these are areas wear you are likely to bounce, so extra protection has been provided here. Although in all honesty, you simply cannot beat a good back protector, so I would urge anyone to wear one who plans on having a close encounter with the road/track. In terms of comfort, the Spyke Blaster comes with a removable poly-mesh lining on the inside of the suit which you may wish to take out on the hotter days, or put back in on the colder ones.
Protection comes in the form of knee and shoulder armour on the outside of the suit which is known as Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastometer. This tongue twisting plastic is design for excellent abrasion resistance, wearing resistance, tear strength, as well as having a high load bearing capability, so it's safe to say it will keep your shoulders and knees protected in the event of an off. Inside the Spyke Blaster you also have CE approved removable armour in the elbows, shoulders and back for extra protection against knocks.

For those chasing tenths of a second on lap times, an aerodynamic hump has been fitted to the upper back of the suit, but I like to think of it as protection for the nape of your back rather than a speed benefit.
It's safe to say at it's current price the Spyke Blaster suit is up there near the top in terms of price range, but when looking at all of the above you can kind of see why. You are paying for a gorgeous looking, well protected piece of kit that is going to withstand a lot of punishment before it lets you get hurt. So if you want to look the muts nuts, be well protected and can afford it, I say the Spyke Blaster is an excellect choice.
