RST Razor Leathers Review - Jacket and Jeans

The RST Razor leathers are a very close cousin to the Tractech suit, the only real differences being in the design and the fact you cannot buy the RST Razor leathers as a one piece suit, only a jacket and jeans combination. As with all other RST leathers though the Razor range offers great value for money. Let's take a closer look why.

RST Razor Jacket

RST Razor Jacket

The main construction of the RST Razor jacket is made from 1.1mm-1.2mm full grained cowhide and as I have said in other reviews, full grained leather is important because it means that no part of the leather has been removed in the manufacturing process, nor has the leather been sanded, buffed, or snuffed to remove imperfections from it's surface.

As with all of RST's range, the leather is double stitched across the majority of the jacket with triple stitching being used in impact areas. Also the thread used for the stitching is 40's grade bonded nylon, this and the triple stitching go together to give pretty darn good burst resistance.

Armour in the jacket comes courtesy of RST's CE approved Contour plus armour, which basically means it has been pre moulded to fit nicely to your body when on and off the bike. This in particular is a benefit, as previous jackets I have owned have started to feel uncomfortable over long periods of time when the armour digs in. There's also a back protector built in to the jacket, but as I have said in previous reviews a stand alone good quality back protector is the only way to go.

Comfort wise and for the colder months the RST Razor has a removable 75g heat sealed quilted lining which goes towards keeping some of the cold out, but I'll be honest and say with all the stretch panel areas this is by no means a winter jacket, leave that to the textile winter ranges. The stretch panels help keep the jacket nice and tight to your body while at the same time giving you a good range of movement in the arm areas so it doesn't feel too stiff.

There is a full length waist zip on both the RST Razor jacket and jeans so they can be securely connected together. I like this feature because it acts as suspenders but will also help stop the jacket riding up in the event of an off, something I've found on more than one occasion at Brands Hatch.

These jackets are very good in the summer as with all the perforated leather and the stretch panels you are well ventilated, although on slow speed rides you can't get away from the heat, but until they invent air conditioned suits I'm afraid we're stuck.

RST Razor Jeans

RST Razor Jeans

The RST Razor jeans are made to the same standard as the jacket with the same leather, stitching, stretch panels, Contour plus armour and perforated sections. You also get some race compound knee sliders thrown in for those days you fancy going scratching.

One point to make is on the linings of the jeans which seems to be a minor problem across a lot of the RST range and that is that it's a touch too baggy. This means that more often than not your foot gets snagged just as you're about to poke it through, but nothing a quick hop and a shake can't sort out.

Conclusion

It's no coincidence that the RST Razor is the companies best seller, it offers high end protection and comfort for a price tag you would struggle to beat with brand name leathers. So if you're looking for a very reasonably priced motorcycle jacket or jeans (or both) then the RST Razor should be a serious consideration.
